Q: What are the requirements for fire alarm companies to work in Kentucky?
A:
There are no licensing requirements for fire alarm installers or portable fire extinguishers in the Commonwealth of Kentucky at this time.

Q: What are the requirements for fire alarm inspectors to work in Kentucky?
A:
Individuals that are only inspecting and testing fire alarm systems must be certified through this office and have a current inspector’s certification number.

Q: How do I become certified to work as a fire alarm inspector in Kentucky?
A:
Fire alarm inspectors may either be N.I.C.E.T Level II, III or IV Fire Alarm Systems or pass the test administered by Pearson VUE for International Code Council (ICC). You may contact ICC at 877-234-6082 for details (or see link for Pearson Vue in Quick Links).  After you have passed the test with Pearson VUE, call Fire Protection Systems at 502-573-0385 for information on completing the certification process.

Q: How do I become certified to work as a sprinkler inspector in Kentucky?
A:
Sprinkler inspectors may either be N.I.C.E.T Level II, III or IV Water Based Systems or pass the test administered by Pearson VUE for ICC. Q: What types of companies must be licensed by Fire Protection Systems in Kentucky?
A:
There are three Kentucky Fire Protection contractor licenses issued through this office.  They are Sprinkler, Chemical Suppression, and Range Hood Suppression Systems. All companies must be licensed before they can work in Kentucky.

Q: What are the requirements to become a licensed contractor in Kentucky?
A:
Each contractor license applicant must have at least one certificate of competency holder (designer) on staff and must meet insurance requirements (i.e., general liability, with errors and omissions included with general liability coverage and Kentucky worker’s compensation insurance). If companies are a corporation, incorporated, LLC or LP, they must be registered with the Kentucky Secretary of State’s Office.  Call 502-564-2848 for information on registering.

For a sprinkler contractor license, the certificate applicant must be a N.I.C.E.T. level III or IV sprinkler layout technician.

For chemical suppression systems, the applicant may be the same as for sprinkler systems or the applicant may be a N.I.C.E.T. level III or IV special hazards layout technician.  There is also a limited chemical contractor’s license where the certificate holder has a current training certificate from the manufacturers of UL-listed or FM-approved systems.  The license and certificate of competency are limited to those systems for which we have a current training certificate on file.

The range hood suppression contractor’s certificate holder may be the same for sprinkler systems or have a current training certificate from the manufacturer of UL-listed or FM-approved range hood fire suppression.

A chemical contractor license/certificate of competency may not be used for range hood application; at the same time, range hood contractors/certificate holders are limited to range hood systems unless they also have a chemical contractor’s license.

Q: How do I obtain applications for sprinkler, range hood, and chemical contractors and associated certificate(s) of competency?
A:
To obtain a contractors packet, you may send a written request to the Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction, Fire Protection Systems, 101 Sea Hero Road, Suite 100, Frankfort, KY 40601.  The request may also be faxed to Linda Tracy at 502-573-1598 or emailed at Linda.Tracy@ky.gov.  Be sure to specify the type of contractor’s packet you require and  provide a complete mailing address as the packets are not faxed or emailed back to the requesting individuals.

Q: What are the requirements for inspecting hand-held (portable) fire extinguishers?
A:
There are no licensing requirements for hand-held (portable) fire extinguishers. Individuals are to follow the requirements of the NFPA 10.

Q: What are the requirements for burglar alarm installations and inspectors in Kentucky?
A:
There are no licensing requirements for burglar alarm installers and inspectors in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.  Installers and inspectors should contact local jurisdictions for any requirements local government may have.
