Q: What codes are used to inspect for fire safety?
A:
Currently the Division of Fire Prevention uses the 2012 NFPA 1 (National Fire Protection Association) “Fire Prevention Code," as well as the 2012 NFPA 101 “Life Safety Code” to inspect existing buildings.

Q: How do I get an inspection done for day care approval?
A:
You may contact the Division of Fire Prevention/General Inspection Section by calling 502-573-0388.  You may also email our contact person noted below.  Be sure to include the type of day care license you are requesting along with the address, phone number and contact information.

Q: How often should the smoke detector in an apartment be tested?
A:
Electric-powered single station smoke detectors are required to be tested on a monthly basis.  Battery-powered smoke detectors should be tested weekly.

Q: Are fire drills required in educational facilities? If so, how often?
A:
Yes, emergency egress and relocation drills shall be conducted monthly within the first 30 days of the start of the school year.

Q: Who has primary jurisdiction for the inspection of day cares?
A:
The Division of Fire Prevention/General Inspection Section has primary jurisdiction for life safety inspections of day care centers.
